Samuel grieved that the Lord rejected Saul as the king
LORD said to Samuel: ”I’m sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem because I’ve selected one of his sons to be king.”
Samuel did what the Lord told him. When he went to Bethlehem to make a sacrifice, he invited Jesse and his sons to the sacrifice. When they came, he saw Eliab and thought that he will be the chosen king. LORD said: “Humans look at outward appearances, but the Lord looks into the heart”
Then Jesse called Abinadab and brought him to Samuel. LORD did not chose him as king either.
Then Jesse had Shammah come to Samuel. “The Lord has not chosen this one either,” Samuel said
Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, LORD has not chosen these.
Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?”
Jesse said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep”. Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him”.
And he sent and brought David in. Now David was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome.
The Lord said to Samuel, “Get up and anoint him. He is the one.”
Samuel took the horn with the oil in it, and poured the special oil on Jesse’s youngest son in front of his brothers.

The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of Midian seven years.
because of Midian the people of Israel made for themselves the dens that are in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds. Whenever the Israelites planted crops, the enemies would come up against them. They would encamp against them and devour the produce of the land. Israel was brought very low because of Midian. And the people of Israel cried out for help to the Lord.
the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah while Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, “The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor”. And Gideon said to him, “Please, sir, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.” And the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?” And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” And the Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.” And he said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me. Please do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you.” And he said, “I will stay till you return.”

So Gideon went into his house and prepared a young goat and unleavened cakes from an ephah of flour. The meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the terebinth and presented them. And the angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them on this rock, and pour the broth over them.” And he did so. Then the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes. And fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. And the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight. Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace.

That night the Lord said to him, “Take your father’s bull, and the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it and build an altar to the Lord your God on the top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in due order. That night Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the Lord had told him.
When the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah beside it was cut down. And after they had searched and inquired, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing”. Then the men of the town said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die”. But Joash said to all who stood against him, “Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because his altar has been broken down.”

The Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon, and he sounded the trumpet. The Abiezrites, people from Manasseh, Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali followed him. Then Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said, behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said.” And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water. Then Gideon said to God, “Let not your anger burn against me; let me speak just once more. Please let me test just once more with the fleece. Please let it be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground let there be dew.” And God did so that night; and it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew.

Gideon and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped in the valley. The Lord said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained.

And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.” So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.” And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “With the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.” So the people took provisions in their hands, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the 300 men. And the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.

Gideon divided the 300 men into three companies and put trumpets into the hands of all of them and empty jars, with torches inside the jars. And he said to them, “Look at me, and do likewise. When I come to the outskirts of the camp, do as I do. When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’”

So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands. Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow. And they cried out, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” Every man stood in his place around the camp, and all the army ran. They cried out and fled. When they blew the 300 trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his comrade and against all the army.

Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, you and your son and your grandson also, for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.” Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the Lord will rule over you.” And Gideon said to them, “Let me make a request of you: every one of you give me the earrings from his spoil.” And they spread a cloak, and every man threw in it the earrings of his spoil. And Gideon made an ephod of it and put it in his city, in Ophrah.
And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.

Empty tomb- Jesus risen from the dead

On the third day after Jesus was dead, Mary Magdalene and her friends came to the tomb early to pay respects for him. It was still dark, and Mary and her friends were worried that who will roll the stone away from the entrance to the tomb. For they knew the soldiers had made the tomb very secure  that nobody can go in. When they came to the tomb they saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.

And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She then recognised Jesus. Jesus told her to tell the other disciples that he is going to the Father. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

Noahs Ark

Noah and the flood- Genesis 6,7

Genesis 6,7

Noahs Ark Cains sons multiplied the earth and they were not obeying God. Seths sons wanted to please God.  As the time passed, the people started to live lie that is displeasing to God. They went away from the ways of God.

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

Noah was a righteous man in his age, blameless. He lived a life that is pleasing to God. He had 3 sons. Shem, Ham, Japheth.

Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.”. God asked Noah to build a big ark. God directed Noah to make an ark of gopher wood and cover it with pitch inside and outside. The Ark was to be 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high, and have an opening for daylight near the top, an entrance on its side, and three decks.

Noah obeyed God and he did just as what God wanted him to do.

The Lord then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation. Take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and one pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, and also seven pairs of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth. Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made.”

Noah obeyed God. When Noah was 600 years old, the Flood came, and that same day, Noah, his family and the beasts went into the Ark, and God shut him in. For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. All flesh with the merest breath of life died, except for Noah and those with him on the Ark. The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days. But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded.

Sin started to multiply and people started to fight and they were all living against Gods will. This is the time when Enoch lived. But he was a righteous man.

Enoch married. He had a son called Methuselah when he was 65 years old. Enoch started to think about the future. He wanted to please God. He had vision about the future. This we can know from the meaning of the name he had given for his son. He told men about the coming wrath of God. Enoch walked with God. He had a close relationship with God.

Cain and Abel- Genesis 4

vegetables farmer Adam and Eve had 2 sons, Cain and Abel. Abel became a shepherd, and Cain became a farmer.  At harvest time,Cain brought a gift to the Lord. He brought some of the food that he grew from the ground, but Abel brought some animals from his flock. He chose some of his best sheep and brought the best parts from them. The Lord accepted Abel and his gift. But he did not accept Cain and his offering. Cain was sad because of this, and he became very angry.

The Lord asked Cain, “Why are you angry? Why does your face look sad?You know that if you do what is right, I will accept you. But if you don’t, sin is ready to attack you. That sin will want to control you, but you must control it.

Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” So they went to the field. Then Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?”  And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord.

Lessons to learn:

1. We must worship God. Our worship should be according to Gods will.

2. A sinner is destined to die. Only the blood of Jesus Christ (death of Jesus Christ) is able to redeem a person from his sin
